Horseback Trail Riding at Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs

Horseback Trail Riding
at Garden of the Gods
Colorado Springs

This is a bit out of context for this web site, but I thought I'd just include a short page on it since the scenery is so awesome. Sometimes I need a break from foot-hiking and climbing, but I still want to be "out there", and horseback riding is a good way to do it.

The quality of the pictures is less than cool, but it is difficult to take pictures (one handed) while trying to control a horse-with-a-personality (also one handed) also while moving in a not-so-smooth way. But you can still get the idea from what you see (ignore the pink sky); the sun was also blazing that day and that creates video effects.

Three rides are offered at Academy Riding Stables. The first is one hour through the park; recommended for people who don't want to spend too much time, or are not in good shape, or not really sure they want to do this. Else forget it - with only one hour, you will be turning back just as you start enjoying it! The second is two hours and it is well worth it; I did that one first. And I liked it so much I came back the following week to take the third ride, which is called the "perimeter" ride, and it is three full hours around and through the park.

You can click the little pictures to get the big picture if you want.

Me and my new friend SPIRIT!
W'he's a good bwoyy! Yeahh!

SPIRIT began his life in the wild and spent his first few years there; he is (was) a wild mustang! He was rescued (apparently from less than ideal living conditions) and has since been living on a ranch where he is loned out for riding. He is a strong horse; the "wild" is still in him. And he is a beautiful golden tan color.

Our guide BECCA leads us out on Blizzard

After a short jog on the roads
we enter the park, Becca first

A lot of this ride is up and down some
serious rock; you know you are on a horse!

SPIRIT just keeps going and going...clop clop clop...
A bit feisty at times, always trying to eat
every plant he sees...

LEFT and RIGHT views entering the park. At first a good trail, open space, grasslands and distant mountains.

Later the trails narrow, become rocky, and the fabulous rock formations start showing up.

A variety of views from SPIRIT:

SPIRIT continues to escort me through
the mystical Garden Of The Gods

SPIRIT shows me awesome rocks,
God's green Earth,
Magical Mystical Creation
Pike's Peak

And all good things must come to an end as ordained. But there will always be another day. Stay cool my friends!

Hast thou given the horse strength? hast thou clothed his neck with thunder? Canst thou make him afraid as a grasshopper? the glory of his nostrils is terrible. He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength: he goeth on to meet the armed men. He mocketh at fear, and is not affrighted; neither turneth he back from the sword. The quiver rattleth against him, the glittering spear and the shield. He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage: neither believeth he that it is the sound of the trumpet. He saith among the trumpets, Ha, ha; and he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
